Supporting Mental Health Recovery

The Crisis Stabilization (CS) serves adults age 18 and older in Region IV. CS’s purpose is to divert, prevent, or reduce psychiatric hospitalization for individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis, or assist them in returning to their community from such a hospitalization.

CS accomplishes this by providing daily program services, assisting individuals to mobilize community resources, and connecting individuals to those around them for ongoing recovery. Service modalities include: psychiatric assessment, medication and symptom management, supportive counseling, mind-body techniques, medically assisted withdrawal management, introduction to mental health recovery concepts, development of individualized Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), coping skills training, case management, and linkage to community resources.

Participation Guidelines

Individuals grow and resolve crisis best when they feel safe and respected. Living and working closely together can
be stressful, especially when individuals are already in a state of crisis. We have developed guidelines to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all. If you need additional assistance resolving conflicts, please let program staff know.

Eligibility Criteria
for Crisis Stabilization

The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) has established specific eligibility criteria for admission into a Crisis Stabilization (CS). To qualify, an individual must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Active Behavioral Health Crisis
The individual is currently experiencing a significant behavioral health crisis requiring immediate intervention.
  • Need for Urgent Intervention
The individual is currently experiencing a significant behavioral health crisis requiring immediate intervention.
  • Presence of Specific Risk Factors
The individual is currently experiencing a significant behavioral health crisis requiring immediate intervention.
  • Potential for Decompensation
The individual is currently experiencing a significant behavioral health crisis requiring immediate intervention.

These criteria are detailed in the “Crisis Stabilization Medical Necessity Criteria” document provided by the Virginia Medicaid Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS).

It’s important to note that individuals admitted under a Temporary Detention Order (TDO) have their medical necessity established, and services specified in a TDO cannot be limited or denied by DMAS or its contractors.

For the most accurate and personalized information, individuals should contact their local CS provider or community services board. In Virginia, residents can dial 988 to connect with crisis services and receive guidance on available support.
